Nestled in the heart of New York’s scenic Hudson Valley and set along the banks of the majestic Hudson River is the charming, historic town of Esopus. Just two hours north of New York City, here you will find a region rich in its culture and heritage. Known for its agricultural lands, pastoral open spaces and breathtaking mountain views, the natural landscape of the countryside draws outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers of all sorts. And the Hudson Valley is a vibrant cultural center, where art, dance, drama, music and film all have a home.
Esopus hamlets border the Rondout Creek: Sleightsburgh, Connelly and New Salem. Rifton (the home of Perrine’s Bridge) and Dashville border the Wallkill River, and Port Ewen, Ulster Park, Esopus and West Park all border the Hudson River. Other water features include Sturgeon Pool, Esopus Lake, Mirror Lake and Louisa Pond. The central location makes it ideal for a permanent or part time residence, minutes from Kingston, Rosendale, New Paltz and Lloyd with easy access to commuter trains, buses and the thruway.
Esopus is home to much of the Marlboro Mountains, which extend from Newburgh. The highest point of them is at Hussey Hill, which gained notoriety as a place where there were several sightings of “fool’s gold,” leading the formation of multiple mining operations. A more publicly accessible peak is Shaupeneak Ridge, which is home to a cooperative recreation area maintained by Scenic Hudson, and to the John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary.
A culinary flair flourishes in the Hudson Valley and offerings from the influence of the nearby Culinary Institute of America is delectably evident! From outdoor cafes to intimate dining to fun outdoor gathering spots, there is a wide array of cuisines all centered around farm-to-table living. A taste of the Hudson Valley is a culinary adventure to be had.
Whether you are an outdoors fanatic or a low-key adventurer, there is never a dull moment when it comes to activities in our region. Experience the outdoors by horseback, bicycle, boat, trails or skis. Take sanctuary in a peaceful park. Be inspired by the local gardens. Cruise the magnificent Hudson River. Swim, kayak, golf. Pick your own seasonal veggies at a nearby farm. Every day seems like a vacation when you live in the Hudson Valley!
